Does anyone have any experience with this fish? Short of getting a tang, I wanted a colorful algae eater to help with the problem algae I've been having.

I dont know that this fish will help with algea, but I can tell you it is a really cool fish. You will love it. Except mine thought it was fun to ride the stream into the overflow. Must of taken him out at least 6 times, until he found his way into the sump

What type of algae? Many blennies in this family eat microalgae and avoid macroalgae.

I have hair, brown diatoms, green film, etc. I know he won't eat all, but right now all of my fish are mainly carnivores.

For compatibility, here is my current livestock list, of which I plan to add a bunch of small hermits & snails:

Purple Firefish
Orange Firefish
Midas Blenny
Yellow Watchman
ORA Ocellaris misbar pair
Purple Reef Lobster
Skunk Cleaner
Coral Banded Shrimp
3 hermits
3 snails
3 Nassarius

He's grown to about 4" from 1" when I got him & molts like clockwork. I guess he'll eat what he can catch but my smallest fish is the yellow watchman, which is like 1-1.5" & he actually sleeps in under a rock near the lobster. Haven't had any problems with him yet.

I make sure when I feed the fish I give him a nice chunk of food.
