Try placing some food in a small net and then put the net inside the over flow. Get the net with the extra long handle. The fish should go into the net and you should be able to pull it out. Also try leaving the net in there, so the fish get use to it, and then try and scoop out the fish as it go by the side near the pipes.

Get a good size hose ,it must reach from where the fish is to your sump. Also, the fish must be able to fit inside the hose. Start a siphon, while the siphin is going try to agitate the fish to swim near the hose. The siphon will suck him up. Have somone with a net holding it under the other end which is flowing into your sump. This way you dont run dry.
I have done so many times that my kids know exactly how to help me when I have to do it.

I tried this before and he happen to skip the drain. then i had to rush and remove the canopy by my self as i started to panic. almost cracked my tank because i don't have easy access to my overflo without taking off canopy.. Have some water on hand incase he does not go down drain assuming he is small enough

I just reach my whole arm with a net in the over flow and in most cases the fish jumps out or panics and freezes up so it is an easy catch. I did get tired of this fast so I made a cover for the over flow to keep jumpers out.

pulling the durso out quick will let the gush of water down quick which usually works, but if not, I would just replace it and turn on the return, then repeat.
he can get lucky only so many times.. lol
