I like to have a plan for what fish I'm going to put in my tank so I have time to look for (or request gotten for me) the perfect one. When I upgrade from my 29g to a 40Br, I am going to add one more fish to my community, but I'm having a little trouble deciding what would fit in best.

My fish are (in order of addition):

1. Blue-Green Chromis
2. Clown Fairy Wrasse
3. Royal Gramma
4. Purple Firefish
5. Golden Midas Blenny
6. Yellow Assessor

I have a community tank, and I want to stay away from aggressive fish. Right now, my only problem is that my midas blenny occasionally harasses the firefish, but he hasn't done any damage and the firefish stays out of his sleeping hole and is a good eater, so I assume it's not stressing him too much. I'm hoping this stops when I upgrade to a tank with more surface area.

I know this is a large bioload, but my nutrients have been consistently low. I'm also keeping 90% LPS and softies, with the occasional easier-to-keep SPS (i.e. monti caps). I'm using an AquaC EV 120 skimmer (which I am keeping for the 40Br).

I am leaning towards a small flame hawk being my final fish (since my peppermint shrimp perished in my long absence), though I am also considering a yashia shrimp goby, a black clown (preferably mis-barred), or a swiss guard basslet.

Does anyone have any other suggestions for me? Something peaceful, colorful, and would be happy in a 40br (3ft by 1.5ft)? Any reason why any of these fish wouldn't be a good choice?

I'd lean toward a Hawkfish. Mine (a Coral Hawkfish) is without a doubt my most personable fish. Always comes over to say hi, looks you right in the eye, poses for pics...he doesn't harrass his tankmates, my scarlett hermits or my Coral Banded Shrimp who too big for him to mess with anyway. He spends a lot of his time perched on my Magfloat. He is housed with a Coral Beauty, LMB, CBS and a Lubbocks Wrasse.

The Redspotted Hawfish is one of the more shy species of Hawkfish, or the Falco Hawkfish also looks like a good choice. While the Flame is undoubtably the most attractive (IMO)..he can be a little too aggressive for your current inhabitants.

starrey eyed blenny. this is my favorite fish in my tank

When I was setting up my tank, that was the blenny that I had planned on. But when I saw the bright golden color morph of the midas blenny in an aquarium in South Africa, I searched hard to find one. Mine is BIG (I'd say a good 4 inches long, which diver's den classifies as "extra large") and I would be afraid of aggression towards another blenny.

Hmm.... I thought flame hawkfish were one of the least aggressive species of hawkfish .... I'll have to do more research on the group.

i enjoy these fish.ive had different types since i started but i have to say theses fish are a perfect match for me.but they are to be in a larger setup then a 40
I LOVE anthias, but my tank is definitely too small for most of them. Sad. I also really like CBB and purple tangs, but my tank is too small for those too. I have to limit myself to what I can happily house.

What about a second purple firefish since they like to be kept in pairs? Do you have a cover for your tank?
Still like the idea of a hawk. The info I gave you on personalities came from the 'Marine Fish' book btw.

All nice blennies mentioned but don't you want something that moves around to more locations in your tank for color?

I do have a cover for my tank. With a midas blenny, a fairy wrasse and a firefish, I would be foolish not to. :)

I do want something with more color, which is another reason I'm shying away from the algae blennies. I feel like most people's tanks are all about the beauty of the coral, but for me I sort of consider the coral to be window dressing for the fish.

I like the idea of a hawkfish as well... On liveaquaria's website, it says that the flame hawks are not as aggressive, but I know their information is wrong sometimes. I need to get the fish book myself instead of borrowing Eric's when I'm over there!!
