These fish were collected in Cebu, Philippines. Unusual to see a chevron there.

Here is another shot of the Yellow tang collected at the same location and time as the chevron.

Cool deal Dave!

We got a yellow tang from there (true yellow) as well. Boy those guys drifted quite a ways, huh? :)

It seems like a juvenile yellow was mimicking the lemonpeel angel, so maybe you could find some adult lemonpeel there!

Interesting to see those as well!

It's a "yellow tang", just not the yellow tang you are thinking of (Zebrasoma flavescens). It is one of the forms of the mimic surgeonfish, Acanthurus pyroferus. It looks like an older juvenile, mimicking the yellow angel, Centropyge heraldi. There are forms that mimic lemonpeel angels and half-black angels. Another species, Acanthurus tristis, mimic the eibli angel. They change color once they grow larger than their intended models.

I've never noticed a lemonpeel mimic with blue and black on the tail like that but apparently none on the face. Is that unusual?

To my eye it looked like an unusual mimic tang. Also mimic lemon peel tangs are generally not found around Cebu so that in itself would be unusual. The white marking around the eye and gill cover looked quite unusual to me. I have also received z. flavecens from Cebu, many claimed them to be xanthic scopas tangs but I believe them to have actually been flavecens.

They got real Z. flavescens as I got some of them from a shipment send out from Cebu.
But sometimes also a xanthic (?) form that is very similar available from the same place.

As I remembered, one of LFS in HK had imported a Chevron tang once form Philipine (actually, I can't sure it is from Cebu or not) and more interesting, the shippment also contain....a Helfrich's firefish.....

You guys are funny. clearly those fish were imported from elsewhere and shipped out as if they were locally collected. Even if the fish was collected in Cebu it was likely the result of a fish which was somehow accidentally released. A similar story happened years ago when some researchers were prepared to describe a cortez angel found in a Phillipines fish store.

Sorry Jake not so and very doubtful. Many importers have brought in HI fish from Cebu/PI over the years. Cebu doesn't even have a fish store from what some locals have told me, never confirmed it though. I've seen pictures of yellow tangs there from the early 80's.

Fish Dave isn't some dude off the street and sees more fish yearly then you and I combined. You drool at his place every time we go to LA :P

And it goes the other way too...Forcipiger longirostris is not said to inhabit the Eastern Pacific, but sure enough people see them in Mexico yearly. If there was more collection in the Eastern Pacific, I'm sure more "Indo" species would show up. Remember: when you read an account of a fish species its range is determined from reports, which may or may not be verified or all encompassing. The Philippines probably has the most fish collection per unit of measure of anywhere in the world. Its not surprising so many of these discoveries occur there.

Imported and then sold at Philipines price?
impossible.
