I was wondering how Dana is able to gather data on corals in captivity. As most of you probably do not know, it is illegal in the state of Hawaii to posses corals in captivity. Can you believe that? No reef tanks with stony corals allowed in Hawaii. One must have a scientific collection permit. These permits are impossible to get unless you are an educational institution such as a school or a public aquarium. Perhaps Delbeek can elaborate and explain how it is possible for Dana to legally perform this research in Hawaii. Ofcourse, Im not speaking about tidepool observations but data collected in captivity as in the photo with porites in the glimmer tank. I enjoy trying to find useful information from Dana's articles but do not wish to contribute to breaking any laws.

I believe Dana's on a research grant.

A research Grant? Who would fund research for the aquarium industry? I must be in the wrong business. A Research Grant does not entitle one to a collection permit for corals in Hawaii. I went to the Dept land and natural resources website for Hawaii. These permits are impossible to get. I find it disturbing that Advanced aquarist would print articles based on data that was possibly collected by sacrificing one of the few reefs USA has. I thought we were the people who advocate protecting our natural resources. Advanced aquarist should have a better understanding of who and how one is collecting data for their articles. " I believe she is on a research grant" does not suffice!

IMO you are jumping to conclusions without warrent. First of all Dana is a man. I know Dana personally, and I can tell you that he loves the creatures of the sea as much as anyone I know. It is scientests like Dana who will, through their research, prevent corals from persishing through aquarists lack of information. Furthemore, it is aquarists who care about the reefs of the world, not Exxon/Mobil

I gues that the fact that HE works in the Waikiki Aquarium grants HIM some access to laboratories and such. Research b4 you come in here barking.
