I have a 5 gallon FW tank at my job and had 3 male fancy guppies and a male and female Dalmation Mollie. Long story short there were 27 fish in the tank so I decided to take the dalmation mollies home after reading a TON of articles acclimating them and the possible benefits to having them.
They may eat green hair algae, they have been seen to eat red and brown algae also. But with all 3 it's hit or miss.
Day 1
Took them home, placed them in a small container drip acclimated for 4 hours until salt level was at 1.020 then added them to the tank 10:30pm.
Female - Immediately started to pick at the rocks
Male - Looked very confused
None of the fish I have bothered the mollies at all. The tank mates consist of Algae Blenny, Sailfin Tang, 6 line wrasse, Royal Gramma, Chromis. The cleaner shrimp went straight to them to check them out which of course spooked them. The coral banded shrimp was relentless trying to catch them. He actually did catch the male by his tail but the mollie got out with nearly no problem.
Left the light on another half hour (watching the whole time) they stayed mostly at the top for about 10 mins then found an empty spot on the sand to rest.
Day 2
Woke up about 7am and got worried that I didnt see them. After turning the light on they came out from the rocks. No cuts, gashes or torn fins so im assuming they had an uneventful night. I fed the fish neither one of the mollies ate. Got home from work both fish were checking things out and I was happy to find not one scratch on them. Decided to try to feed a little again and neither mollies ate.
I dont have hair algae or much of it so i really didnt notice any change of the rocks IF they even were picking.
Day 3
Woke up at 7am both fish were already out the male was flashing his fins at the female and any time she turned he would cut her off with fins blazing. It obvious he is trying to breed with her. Fed them some pellets which neither fish ate and then tried a little mysis, the female sucked in a piece and immediately spit it out.
Will update as time goes on, hope someone finds this interesting!
