Humu Humu Trigger

I am thinking about purchasing a Humu Humu triggerfish and was wondering what other fish can go with him? Are there any shrimps or inverts that can be mixed with him as well?

The Humu Humu AKA Picasso Trigger is one of the more docile of the trigger species. However they do possess a large "beak" and have the habit of picking on anything. I have had a 3" Picasso, 4" Spotted Grouper, and Tomato Clown living quite peacefully for now. I have just recently added a large turbo snail and medium hermit crab to control algae growth in my 45 Gallon tank. My LFS urged me that these would be eaten for breakfast by either the Trigger or the Grouper. About 2 weeks later the algae is under control and all inhabitants are doing great for now. My advice for what ever its worth is to make sure that the fish you put with the Humu Humu are about the same aggressiveness and size/age and you should just see what works for your situation.

Humu Humu/Picasso Triggers are on the mid to low end of the aggression scale for triggers. That said, they are still triggers. If you are purchasing a small 2" or so specimen and raising it with other fish of similar size it should be MUCH more docile than if you put a large specimen in the tank. If you are set on the Huma hopefully your LFS has several examples in stock. Observe and see which ones pick on their tank mates (and who/what their tank mates are) at the store. A juv angel of similar size has always done well in my experience w' triggers. You can also try trigger w' trigger but that can sometimes blow up in your face unexpectedly one day as both the triggers get older. If the Humu's tank mates have some places to hide that helps muchly as well. I don't know what other fish you are into but that would be a place to start.

plus, I wouldn't trust inverts with one. They MIGHT leave shrimp/crabs/snails alone, but are just as likely to eat them.

If I ever try such a tank and risk mobile inverts, I'd try a baseball sized hermit crab or a big chocolate chip starfish -- but even those might get munched.

what size tank are you going to put him in? My huma is one of my more active triggers so it does well by having more swimming space. Also in my case I have a very aggressive huma and it has actively gone after my niger and an undulated. This is in a 300 aggressive fowlr.

I have a picasso trigger with the following: flame angel, yellow tang, royal gramma, 2 percula clowns and 1 strawberry grouper. The inverts I have are a large hermit, several little bule legged guys, and various sizses of turbo snails. There has been at least one turbo disappearance from his shell. All crabs are still there. I think if the picasso is well fed, you will not have to worry too much about your fish. You will lose some inverts. If you feed it goldfish (NOT RECOMMENDED) you may have problems with fish of similar size. Stick with guppies, shrimp and plankton for food.

Several LFS have told me "it might work", but there are no guarantees.
