why is it that i can't keep a hippo tang for more then 2 dayz in my tank:letitallois there anything i can do when picking them out in the store:banghead:
they get stressed out very easily, maybe the ones youre getting are too small. if they keep dying wait until you figure/correct out whats causing it before you buy a new one. when youre ready to get one thats for sale from someone elses tank
Firstly I'm new to this site but have 15 years of fishkeeping from my reef 125 to my 45g discus and fantail guppies. back to the tangs my problems with this were solved by firstly finding a good stock from a good supplier. Than I feed live and dried macro the sushi type with whatever I can get. they are really sensitive to ammonia nitrates nitrates and I double filter my waterchang water from tap as it has crazy things in it...Anyway sorry for the long winded answer but I had gone through 4 before the dealer gave me those instructions3 years latter my hippo looks like one...

thanks for the help i think its my juvi blue tang nipping at them thats the only thing i can put my finger on and i saw him once or twice red finned :fishhit:
Hippo tangs like all tangs are schooling fish which means they will always be stressed in your tank. Extra care is needed for certain fish like tangs. If another fish is picking on them as soon as they are put in the tank they will not get over their fear and may not live more than a few days. Tangs can be literally scared to death. If they can be left alone by their tankmates for a week or two in the beginning tangs can live ten or more years. Hippo's are very hardy if they are fed enough vegatable matter and they are not harassed when young. When they get older they are well equipped to defend themselves. Also with any fish make sure you see it eating in the store although malnutrition was not the cause of death in yours. They can go without eating for weeks.
Good luck.
