I was wondering if anyone has had any experience with Five Bar Mystery wrasses. I am planning on purchasing one and was wondering if it would kill any of my shrimp. I have a Pair of Large Harlequin Shrimp, bullseye pistol shrimp, 2 camelback shrimp, 2 medium size scarlet cleaner shrimp and one 3" blood shrimp. I also have 250-300lbs of LR. I have heard of wrasses in its genus attacking shrimp but was not sure if this particular one would. If you have any info on this species will you please post it.

Thank you

Ian B.

Not many folks have this fish, and I have never personally seen them on import. I do, however, have an associate and friend who has one in his tank. I will offer that you can count on the wrasse to eat whatever it finds tasty, and suspect that many crustaceans would suit its menu quite nicely.

i have read on this site (http://www.advancedaquarist.com/issues/feb2003/Fish.htm) that they don't eat shrimp with the exception of anenome shrimps in the genus Periclimenes. And only the larger of the Pseudocheilinus ocellatus eat these small shrimp. I have a good friend that owns a store that has seen one and said he will pick it up for me from the wholesalers in tampa, but i just want to know what my chances are of this beatiful fish wiping out my shrimp population. You said you had a friend with a mystery wrasse? Does he have any crustaceans in his aquarium and what kind of fish does he house it with. Thank you for your knowledge and help. I am only 16 years old and have only kept marine fish for 3 years, and am trying to attain as much knowledge about marine life as I can. It also helps me provide an excellent home for my vertebrates/invertebrates all in my 180 gallon aquarium.

He "had" crustaceans, although this fish isn't the only likely culprit. Not having ever kept this fish myself, again, I can only make some suppositions.

I have had one for over 2 years. He has grown from a 2 1/2 inch juvi to a 5 inch monster. The white bars have gone away and he is peaceful to everone including inverts, with the exeption being he lets his fellow wrasses (juvi tusk and a several year-old 6-line) know he is the boss on occasion. Excellent all around fish.
