Spot/Growth on True Percula... Assistance requested.

Hi guys,

Got this True Perc about 3 weeks ago and I noticed a small white bump on his lower lip when I got him home. At first I thought it might have been normal, but now after 3 weeks, it seems to be getting larger... I also notice a white spot on one side near his gill... Could these be part of the same problem or separate problems... I've read about "white spot", is that what that is on his gill? How 'bout that thing on his lip?? It took me about 150 tries with my digital camera, but I got a few pics... They are attached below... Ammonia, Nitrite, & Nitrate are all zero... He eats fine and seems to swim fine as well... Can anyone recommend treatment? Any input would be greatly appreciated...

It looks like a fungal infection to me. Its hard to tell from the photo, is it raised, kinda like cotton? If it is, remove fish from tank, hold in hand (or damp towl (saltwater)), carefully scratch off fungus, apply a little Methylene Blue in liquid form to wound (be careful not to get methyle blue any place else, gills esp.) Put fish back in tank. I've done this tons of time @ my various jobs (wholesale,service & retail)

It looks like Lymphocystis to me, which is a viral disease that usually goes away by itself, especially if water conditions are good and the fish is otherwise in good health.

Sounds like it. It is very common with new fish, and as I said goes away by itself. Don't try to medicate! If other spots appear, like grains of salt then it may also have Cryptocaryon irritans, which is a whole other ball game.

I am pretty sure it is in deed Lymphocystis , an usually self limited viral disease, related to some kind of stress(alteration in water parameters, new tank, et..).
some years ago I had 4 ocellaris clowns with that disease, and I was ignorant enough to try to remove in two of the fishes with a scalpel(it was in the fins).
it turns out that I lost those two, and all the others recovered nicely...
That was a hard but a nice lesson...
