Hi, I'd sure appreciate any help you guys can give me with this one.
The tank is a 7' (cycled a month ago) My water parameters are ammonia 0, nitrite 0, nitrates 10, temp 80, salinity 1.009. I'm treating my a few fish and my dogface puffer (3.5") for previous exposure for ich.
I bought the puffer on Oct 10, he was fine for 10 days, eating and swimming normal (quite active) during this time he looked like he had some white grains of salt coming off of his body. Then on the 10th day he kept his mouth shut and wouldn't eat...looked a little slow. Now this is the hard thing to describe, but he had a stringing like substance coming from his mouth that almost looked like fuzz attached to a hair?? It was about 1 " long. I set up a FW dip, matching the PH and temp. (I added some quick cure) I dipped him in it and left him for 13 minutes. Within a hour of being returned to the tank he was totally back to normal, and seemed very hungry...eating some shrimp. He was perfect for 5 days..when these signs reappeared? samething exactly, clamped mouth...stuff coming from the mouth (hair like with fuzz). I did another FW dip with methyblu this time and left him 15 minutes. Returned him to the tank and within a hour again he was eating like a pig. This time he was only good for 1 day...in which the symtoms reappeared?? I dipped him for 20 minutes this time (wasn't seeming to stress out during the dips) That was Friday night and by Saturday the "thing" is back?? At the bottom of the dip pail is a kinda "fuzzy white fluffy stuff"??? He also looks good right after and eats and swims around normally. Now he has got his mouth clamped shut again and is got this "stuff" coming from it again????
please help
thank you

I have an email out to a friend who has managed saltwater stores for years on the specific condition. Soon as she gets back to me I'll post. Sounds like your puffer has something that has gone internal. The fresh water dips help but it only seems to get the symptom not the source. Will the puffer eat food soaked in anti-parasite medicine?
