I have an 11 to 12" emp angel and he has hole in the head. He had some smaller openings but just recently it has become worse. I have done a 50% water change, started adding selcon to the pellets I feed the tank. Has anyone had any luck getting rid of this?

HLLE is not an easy thing to reverse, and likely will never be perfect.

Two most likely causes are environmental (poor water quality and/or stress) and nutrition (poor diet)

Tell me about your tank (size, water parameters, tankmates) and its diet (hopefully not just pellets)
I'd be glad to help
Post or pm is fine.

Wow, just checked out your gallery. You have some beautiful fish but it appears you have A WHOLE LOT OF THEM! How's your water quality? What size tank? Definitely a lot of potential aggression problems.

tank specs: 275 FOWLR, yes there are 22 i believe, and it is a very aggresive tank. located in hartsdale.
yes I do have 5 large angels. my 6th (a mac) came down with something and I'm trying to get him better,
My blue face is the tank bully, and I have tried several emps with him, none have worked and the one I have now is even bigger than him but the blue face does pick on him a lot.
water qual is perfect, going to do another 30% this week just to make sure.
my regal ( which i have had for almost 4 years) started with this a few months ago but it has seemed to have stopped, and just recently my emp has started with it and it seems to be getting worse. thanks for all help, it's much appreciated

You can start to heal HLLE by first making sure you have good water quaility. Also diet is very important, a lot of times fish get HLLE from being fed the incorrect diet, basically flake food.

You should get some Vita-Chem and mix that in with the food. I have used it in the past with very good results. You also need to make sure your fish are getting a lot of greens in their diet, specially the tangs and angels. A good way to know that your fish are being fed correctly, is that they should not only look fat but they should be growing fast and get very large. If you fish aren't growing fast then you're not feeding that correctly.

HLLE can be reversed but it does take quite some time, what you usually can hope for is that it stop and doesn't get any worst. Emp angels are known to get it and it doesn't take much for it to start with them.

You also really need to cut down on the fish that you have in the tank. You have some fish, like the Fucus Trigger, that when it gets larger can and will take out a lot of the fish that you have. Some of your problems could also be coming from over crowding, which will only get worst as the fish get larger.

When I researched this 20 yrs ago, I actually used pharmacetical grade vitamin C in powder form purchased at Wilners on Broadway. The key was to get it soluable in the water column but not so much as to cause diarehea in the fish.

But you have watch your Ph as this will tend to pull it downwards.

Try vitachem first as marrone stated along with selcon and plenty of greens. Even soak the nori strips prior to placing on the nori clip.

I remember when Vita-Chem first came out, the big things about it was that it was water soluable and the Vitamin C was stable and didn't cause the Ph problems. I actually have one a bottle of it that is atleast 14 years old, I bought it with me when I moved about 14 years ago.

nitrated were fine as of a week ago. I have been feeding my tank marine 2 pellets for several years. along with some seaweed for my angels and tangs. PLus frozen kill and silversides for my lion and puffers. I do have a grounding probe. I have used vita chem in the past, but not for a while, so i may go and grab a bottle of that today. And I also use selcon with my pellets.

the tank does have a lot of activity. don't think it's over crowded but i may be wrong. I'm definitely not adding anymore fish.

If I was you I would cut back on a couple of fish, specially in the long run as some of your fish are going to get larger.

Also I wouldn't keep trying to put in a Emp with the Blue face. Both Angels need to be in charge of the tank and at the moment the Blue face is. If you do find a Emp that can hang with the Blue face, it may attack the Blue face or cause the Blue face to be the 2nd angel in the tank and that's not a good thing with a Blue face angel.
