Hey folks,
So I got a new fish this weekend and I'm hoping its ok.

Quick view:
Fish is lying on his side, mouth open constantly, gills 'breathing' at fast pace. Bought fish on Sat. displayed fast breathing symptoms while in bag.
I was able to scoop him from the sandbed into a cup and now have him in a fish carrier. Extremely docile fish atm.

Parameters:
82 deg (I always keep it between 80 and 82 for the life of the tank)
sal 1.025
nitrates- 30 (is consistently this high with other fish always healthy)

Long view:

So, when I got him home I noticed he was "breathing" hard but attributed it to the fact that he KEPT JUMPING UP IN THE BAG!!!

I was like "whoa, well, they said wrasse were jumpers"

Anyway, I drip acclimated him for about an hour and let him hang out in a little fish carrier inside of the tank to temp acclimate too.

He swam around, albeit slowly, for a bit and wasn't being harmed by anyone.
He didn't eat the prepared foods but I did see him attack a rock.

So, I figured he was okay.

Some hours later, I saw him listing to the side and lying on his side.
Still saw no abuse. But he was still "breathing hard"

Then he went to hide in a rock I guess, because I did not see him all day Sunday, and not again until I was about to go to bed this night.

Now, he was hanging out at the back of the tank on his side. I thought he was dead.

Then looked at his face and saw that his mouth was wide open and his gills were going fast.

I poked him with a stick because I wanted to see if he was well enough to swim.

He just looked at the stick and scooted over a little bit.

Then I moved my lights and essentially, scooped him into a cup then put him in his fish carrier to sit at the top of the tank/floating so I can keep an eye on him/find his body if he does die.

So, I put some garlic juice, and prepared foods and a bit of selcon in with him for about 15min then flushed the water in his carrier.

He's still behaving as before.

ugh, that sucks.

He was in the sand, I just took him out tonight because he looked so deathly that I wanted to be sure I could find him.
If he is alive in the morning, I'll add some sand to his little pod.

I should have waited for the wrasse I originally wanted.

Though, it's a type of leopard wrasse too.

Are the blue star leopard wrasses less sensitive?

They are about the same.. I find regular leopard wrasse to be more hardier, especially female. I would just stay away from leopard wrasse altogether.
