I have had a couple ribbon eels.
They are reef safe within reason. The one I had ate a couple small fish, a midas blenny.
The crucial part about ribbon eels is getting one that eats. A large number waste away in tanks because they dont take to food in captivity. If they feed in the store then you are in better shape. If it does not feed then stay away.

Just so you know an eel is an eel at the end of the day and 90 % of them are carnivorous and will eat almost all type of fish that fit in their mouth

I have 3 in my tank
1-small Zebra eel
Very active at feeding time, cute to look at, doesn't bother any corals
(they get real big and kind of fat, it's said that they are not shrimp friendly but I have a cleaner shrimp and nothing has happened. Also when they get big they can knock rocks down) it takes a while for them to grow very big so if you're trying to have it for a while until it outgrows your tank ill say GO

2- Yellow ribbon eel
This eel is kind of special
Very beautiful, It starts black then turns blue to finally yellow, slim and can grow up to three feet in length, they can and will eat small fish that fit in their mouth though
( here is the thing with this one, they are extremely picky eaters and almost always starve to death and stress in captivity. The trick with them is to make them feel very secure and safe from predators and then they'll prob. Start eating. I read a lot about them and found out that if you create a PVC tunnel system under the sand with both ends sticking out with elbow fittings they'll go in and feel right at home and it will encourage them to eat[thats exactly what I did and it worked]. The next challenge is to get them to eat frozen food, It can take a while but you just have to keep trying (silversides, pieces of shrimp)
Once everything is on point..just feed and enjoy

3- garden eel
This one rarely comes out the sand so I rarely see him.. From the day I got it, it took me almost a month for me to see it again.. I dont know how it survived but it poped its head back out one day.

If you want an eel just read a lot on them
