Hello everyone,

It is a great feeling to know there is some place to turn for advice from knowledgeable enthusiasts . My name is Jim, I'm from Long Island NY and a commercial net fisherman. My objective is to keep Menhaden,Spearing, and ghost shrimp live. I currently have floating round cages with circulating pumps that work pretty good.

However birds are a big issue as well as rising and falling tides. I'm in the process of trying to set up an outdoor tank. It's a little over 2000 gallons and will be running 6 months a year on land. The top can be covered and locked so it will cover the bird problem. It's located near the dock where my boat is kept. I will be pumping raw salt water from the bay into the tank with a direct overflow returning to the bay.

My question is what's the best way to clean algae from hoses and pvc pipe? Also what would you recommend for an air diffuser in this application? Thank you in advance.

It is usually not suggested to use water near where boats are docked (or land for that matter due to the run off from fertilizers) when trying to keep livestock due to the gas/oil/pollution typically found in those places.

The folks who do use natural seawater transport it from further off shore or get it where they know the area is 'clean' on a rising tide.

The use of black hosing or PVC is suggested to keep algae in check as the sunlight cannot penetrate them.

A bubbler typically used in pond applications could be used as an aerator.

Where do you plan to keep these critters during the winter months or will you just let the ones you have caught all go?

Thanks for the reply, What doesn't sell gets set free at the end of Striped Bass season December 15th. I never considered the water quality, I guess because the fish are caught in the same creek that the water is pumped from. That makes perfect sense to use black pipe. This creek is located 2nm from the ocean inlet.
