I am mulling over what return pump to use on a 325 display tank with 75 gallon sump. Worried about noise since it is in my living room. Would it be better to go with 2 darts or 1 hammerhead? Any one with experience please chime in. Or any other pump that you think would work better.

what are you trying to do? How do you plan to use 2 darts?
I power my entire system (returns, 'un-closed' loop, skimmer, frag tank, chiller, reactors) with 1 hammerhead gold...very happy with it!

The tank has 4 returns. Right now i just want it as a rteturn and to run my chiller. Not sure about closed loop or not. How is the noise on the hammerhead?

well you could run all 4 returns at once (controlled with ball valves), or rotate thru an Ocean Motions or SQWD...Dart should be fine for that...does chiller return to tank or sump? what powers skimmer?
Hammerhead is quiet, (similar to Dart that I had)...will it be in closed cabinet?, you're welcome to come up and check out my system, anytime.

Keep in mind your bottleneck may be your drain. You don't want to pump more water into the tank then your drain can take.
that's why I asked about chiller return...not to mention volume of water going thru sump...too much to filter!

There is something to be said for redundancy in system design. There is something to be said for redundancy in system design.
you're like a broken record!

are you using it for just a return or plumbing other equipment?..also whats the head pressure on the return?, what size pipes on the overflows and return? I'm using a Dart just for the return pumping up from the basement about 10' which gives me about 12-1400 gph and I'm using 1 1/2" pipes on the overflow as well the return and it's more than enough....both pumps can be throttled back with a ball valve if needed.

i'm pretty much open to suggestions. i could do either as far as the chiller is concerned. I have a ASM G4+ that is powered by a sedra 9000. I beleive it has 2- 2inch drains. i think that shoulb be around 2600-3000 gph. might also want to hook up reactors to the pump also. The stand is pretty much enclosed except for the back.

I would recommend 1 hammerhead instead of 2 darts because it's much cleaner, easier to valve off to different places(ie:skimmer, chiller,uv) and you won't have to drill more holes into the tank for drains.. The down side is the vibration and noise in a living will become annoying at first then you'll get used to it, if remotely plumbed go for the hammerhead..
With Darts they are much quieter and easier to quiet vibration, you'll just need to have more drains drilled..
Who wants powerheads in their system?? that's not a good look especially when you have "planned" out you system well,,lol..
Hope this helps a little more Tito..

There are a few ways I can go they have the super dart gold. They also have a hybrid hammerhead that you can switch the impeller and turn it into a barracuda with less flow. Ans a regular Gold Hammerhead. I will have powerheads in there also 2 mp40's and 2 tunze. The tank does have 2 drains already...

1 1/2" drains? I'd suggest more or larger drains with 5000+gph
Glass or acrylic tank?

Bigsink has the same tank and says ther 2 inch. So not sure. If it is 2 inch is the hammerhead good? I would prefer the dart just want to make sure it is enough.

Hard to tell from pics, but I would guess that the 2 returns take 1" bulkheads, and the drain takes 1 1/2" bulkhead...not enough for hammerhead flow

As I said, can't tell from pic, but 2" bulkhead requires 3"+ hole
I think two 1 1/2" drains can handle the flow from hammerhead, BUT, if one were to clog...it could be a problem, which is why I'd prefer add'l drains or larger bulkheads. Dart is about 3000gph (I think) so that should be enough flow, in combination with the 4 other PHs.
