I just started running a Reef Octopus Xtreme 160. This is my first skimmer (on my first saltwater tank) so maybe my expectations are too high, but the amount of noise seems incredible. I have cut some vinyl tubing in half and wrapped that around the base of the pedestal to absorb some vibration, but I can still hear it throughout my 3 bedroom apartment if everything else is quiet. I'm not entirely sure whether it's the pump, or the vibration caused by the pump generally. Any suggestions to cut down the noise? I bought it online from bulkreefsupply and I'd prefer not to deal with the hassle of trying to return it if I can get it to run quietly.

Thanks.

Does it have a ample amount of room all the way around as to not be touching the sump? If it does get some sound reducing foam (cant recall the correct name - it's a black/gray sponge) and put some underneath the skimmer. But before you do that are you sure it's not the internal parts of the skimmers pump making the noise?

Room - Yes.

I'll try the foam, hopefully I can find some tomorrow.

Internal parts - maybe. It's a steady even vibration sound. It could be part of the pump. I suppose I could take that apart and see what's what. A project for tomorrow. Thanks again.

I had an older Extreme 160 and found the Sicce pump to make a lot of noise. I don't know if yours is the new version with the Sicce PSK-600 or the older one with the PSK-2500. If it is brand new give the pump time to wear in it should quite down a little. Other than the noise the skimmer worked great.
