Been reading a while, just registered.

Have a 54 corner running a current 24" 4 bulb T5 light. 96w total just doesn't seem like enough. Considering going with something like a marineland 24" combo 150 MH and 4 t-5 unit.
Open to other lighting suggestions, and comments.

would like to start out with softies and leathers right now, but really dont want to have to upgrade lighting in the future, if i get into stony's

budget up to $500 for a light.
(also have 2 that i could sell, current 96w t5's, and corallife 130w pc's)

i considered a pendant, but i also do like to have dawn and dusk with the actetnics.

should i go mh/t5 combo?
add more t5's?
would adding leds to my current t5's work?

this would be the 3rd light set-up for the tank, and would like it to be the last.

I would go for an LED MH combo or like you suggested a T5 MH combo

but here's another thing to consider

saving money now or in the long run

LED's cost more at first but but could be a larger savings in a few years
1- LED bulbs last 5-10times longer so add in yearly bulb replacement to the MH expense
2- MH use more electricity for the same effect
3- MH heat the tank which may or may not require you to need a cooling device. If you have a chiller MH will make it run more often adding costs to your electric bill.

taking these points into consideration sometimes LED comes out cheaper.

What wattage MH are you thinking

sean,

was considering a 150w mh with supplemental acetnics at minimum.
or just a 250w mh, maybe a 250w combo

see some nice used combo items on this site.

also should i run a light with feet over the glass top of the tank?
or
hang a light and leave the glass top off?

54 gallon bowfront over here!!!hello my friend i think i know what your going through and i may have a long term solution for you that has in fact worked very well for me , it is the ai solution led lighting system, i have a corner tank bowfront 54 as well and i had i friend make me a bracket that floats the light over my tank 13 inches and the light gives me optimal lighting !! .

i just started and was informed by my brother about the led lights and i now have a 2month old tank that has great lighting throughout the day as well as night without me touching the controller , yes it is automatic, the ai sol is great for all types of aquarium life its a bit costly around the 600 price range but its backed by a great warranty and it pays for itself in just a few years and a big bonus is that it does not cause any increase in water temp! , so if you can get your hands on one unit , it is a tiny thing in comparison but it puts out lighting like a giant!!, i hope this helps i will post pics if you wanna see it in action.

p.s. i had the bracket made from a friend in the welding business, i took off the glass top as it only promotes salt creep , just leave it open and maybe have a custom pond netting made if you have kids.

I used to have a 54 bow front and I used a 250w MH pendent on the tank. It was the perfect amount of light in my opinion. I started with softies in the tank but in the end it was a nice mixed reef. I believe I have the pendent and ballast floating around if you are interested I will give you a good price on it. If I remember correctly it is an aqua medic pendent.

You can but that tank is fairly deep so if you want good light penetration all the way to the sand I would go with the 250w. I wish I had pics on this computer I would post them so you could see them. I have a feeling if you do the 150w you will want more light in the near future. Just my opinion though.

First I would take the glass top off the tank.

As far as using feet or hanging that's up to you, but because you don't have a traditional cube aquarium the hardware may not fit to sit properly on the edge of the aquarium. I would assume hanging would work best.

Personally I would get the 250 watt over the 150 unless your budget doesn't allow it (remember the increase in electic and temperature).

It's worth looking into LED lighting. It's a nice light that should last a long time.

I am personally using MH 14k-20k on most of my tanks with no supplements but I do like LED "moonlights" for a night effect. I use them mainly because thats what I have laying around. If I was going to buy a new Pendant it would most likely be an LED.

Picked up sunpod 14k 250mh from Lenny, and Hung it today. You guys were right, the 250w was the way to go. Tank looks much better.
