I just put my koralia 3's on a timer to alternate every 20 seconds. However, everytime they come on they make a terrible sound like the blade is going to jump out. Does anyone have a fix to make them quieter. I know they sell programmable koralias, but I have 5 already and don't feel like buying 5 more

Why would you do that? You are going to short them out. It's basically the same as you plugging them in and unplugging them every 20 seconds. Just leave them on, they don't need to be on a timer you should have constant flow. Are you keeping corals? Give a description of your tank set up.

After posting this, I searched online and the noise I have is the impeller hitting the front bumper guard when they turn on and can be fixed by putting a small piece of airline tubing on the shaft to act as a shock absorber.

So yes it can be done. The only downfall is that these powerheads work on ac, therefor the impeller jumps forward to spin in the correct manner and sometimes upon startup they will spin in reverse.

In my case, I have 150 gallon 72x18x28 I think, it's very tall. I have had corals before and wish for more of a reef. I currently have two angels, emperor and blue that have totally wiped out all my corals except for a hammer and some mushrooms.
I will be removing them once I find a place for them.

So I have read so much about water flow and these koralias are brand new. If I can use them for now instead of dropping a few hundred on a vortech I will

jfahim, I did the same thing in my setup, anything that prevents the impeller from extending, will make the propeller spin backwards, I must have went thru 1' of airline tubing trying to figure it out, but no luck. The newer koralia, are made to be put on timers, unfortunatly the number series ( 1,2,3,4,5) we have are not. Good luck, and if you do find a way please pm me, as I also don't want to spend a fortune in new pumps.

I have them all going with airline tubing and it is intermittent but the noise is gone. So until I get some powerheads that work on dc current I am going to be running these.

They are moving water even going backwards, so is it even that bad?
