I have a 75 gallon tank and I'm going to use a 39 gallon sump. I'm not sure of the correct GPH that I will need for my overflow box and water pump. I'm looking at a CPR overflow box and the Mag 9.5 for the water pump. Any suggestions would help. Thanks

Hey Stack, insufficient information. Without knowing the rating of the CPR Overflow Box, the height that you'll be returning flow back to your display tank and what type/how many fittings are on the return plumbing it's impossible to say that a Mag 9.5 is appropriate.

A very standard size overflow is 1" which permits only 600 gph flow through it. A Mag 9.5 at zero feet of head will flow 950 gph. I think it's obvious that the flow can't be handled in that situation.

If you can provide the details as requested above I can help you determine if the Mag 9.5 is appropriate.

well I'm brand new into this hobby so I'm learning as I go. I just purchase my tank and I'm getting a 40 gallon sump this weekend. I was looking at CPR CS90 with a flow rate of 600gph and mag 9.5 with a flow rate of 950 gph. I'm also looking at a the aqua c urchin pro as a skimmer. I'm going to do a simple plumbing design with min fittings. I bascially want to know if the flow rates will work together.

How high is the highest return point, above your pump?

Make sure your overflow box handles more flow than your pump will produce.

Adding a powerhead (or two) to your display will give you great flow, and flexibility. A couple of small Koralias would work well.

Since you're a newbie, make sure to check out this site for a couple of hours. Loads of good info:

If you did not buy this overflow box, I would go with another vendor. Reefers have good and bad reviews about this product. I would recommend you look at LifeReef. This overflow box is considered top-of-the-line for non-reef-ready tanks. An important point, is that you want to make sure you don't ever lose prime. LifeReef overflows have reputations for customers satisfied with their products that are many years old.

Good luck,

I couldn't agree more. LR has a great reputation with their overflow boxes. Top notch. ;)
