lighting experts, need light for a 7ft tank 30 inch deep

i would like to do LEDs but are leds too new? i want to be able to grow everything and still try to be somewhat "low" in price, meaning like not 5,000$


any ideas are appreciated, its an open top set up... so if i get something custom to save money i would need a nice fixture

LEDs are going to be expensive. Your best bet would probably be 3 250w MH lights. If you really wanted to save money, you could build a simple but elegant wooden hanging fixture and retrofit them in with good reflectors.

what's your budget? You said "not $5000" but what about going with an ATI Powermodule. Or an Aquactinics Constellation. Those are simply elegant fixtures and they'll reach the bottom of your tank no problem.

I'm in the same boat and from the products I've seen under 3K you'll be replacing the LEDs in a few years (MaxSpec/Alibaba); anything with a long life will more than likely clear 5K as you'll need either 2 rows or run them perpendicular to the tank where you need more (Acan/PS/AI).

The only other choice is a DIY setup.
