No, not a pain.
Be sure to follow the directions carefully! You need to rinse the media - use RO or SW and do what it instructs when you first put it in the tank.

I have found it is easier to use a small damp piece of paper towel in place of where they tell you to use 'tape' to cover the center tube.

Also be aware of the flow rate - if it moves to much you will be breaking the media into smaller pieces and spewing it all over your tank...not a good idea :(

Except that I use a small piece of foil to cover the center tube while I fill it. Also I do a mini water change while rinsing the media in the canister. I turn off my ATO put the reactor's pump in my sump, and the outlet hose in a bucket. Once the water runs clear I return the hose to it's position in the sump. Final step is to replace the water removed during the rinse with newly made ro/di salt water to the sump.;)

To clean, and replace the media in the reactor is not that hard. It can be messy though. I drain all the water from the reactor by turning it upside down in the sink. Once all the water has been drained then I dump the old contents into the garbage can.
