A friend just suggested to me that I place my entire skimmer in a 50/50 mix of vinegar and water and run it for about 30 mins, then just fresh water for 10 mins to rinse. He states this cleans the skimmer and the pump. Is this advisable, will it work??

If you have a lot of calcium deposits, it will dissolve them. Just make certain that you wash *all* the vinegar off afterward.

I own a ETSS RD3 (about 5 years old) I had my mag 9 tuned back becasue I could not control the foam once it actually kicked in. I was ready to toss the skimmer when I attached a air control to the intake at the top of the tower. Turned the Mag 9.5 on full and adjusted the air intake to the right level .... MAN Huge difference. The skimmer is finally working how a skimmer is supposed to work. I walked into the room yesterday and could not believe the smell coming form my tank, it was actually my skimate cup. I almost threw up!

After cleaning your skimmer rinse it with water from the aquarium. Doing so will hasten the the wait for the skimmer to return to normal operation. :wink:

Has anyone ever added a couple of large airstones to a beckett driven skimmer? Does anyone see anything wrong with this? It will increase the amount of bubbles significantly and increase the ratio of air to water passing. In theory in my head, it should work very well.

most prolly dont because you have to replace the air stones and run air lines into them and i doubt that the gain- if any would be worth the effort

My skimmer tip is to throw out the RS Berlin(or turbo) and get a real skimmer.
