Hi everyone, I'm shopping around for anew protein skimmer for my new system which will have about 200 gallons of saltwater in total. I plan to have a medium to heavy bioload as I want to have a tang or two and obviously a heavy amount of SPS Corals when I am done with the build. Are recirculating protein skimmers still the thing to get? I'm slowly getting back into the hobby. Thanks in advance for the assistance.

I have a 180, soon to have a system of 360 gal total with a second 180 tied in as a sump/frag tank. I will most likely be going with a MRC Orca I.

EDIT: pressed post before I finished.

I currently have a NW-200 Reef octopus on the 180. SPS and medium-heavy bioload and it gets the job done.

To keep sps and lots of fish, I would get a skimmer with at least double the factory rated # on the skimmer. If you have a 200g, get a skimmer that's rated for 400g. The neck size of a skimmer is usually a good indication of its capability. Larger the neck size, the more power it takes to push skimmate up and through the neck.

when I was in the 300 gallon range, I used a ETSS1000 down draft skimmer.
I still have it, not using it though, since my total volume is now in the 600 gallon range.
let me know if you are interested in it.
