Just read Marks article on his opinion that the new DC controllable skimmer pumps are just a fad and not worth the coin. So what do you all think? Are the DC skimmer pumps worth a look? worth the extra money over a regular AC pump?

AC pumps run 100% or off. The only way to slow it down is by restricting the output.

DC pumps have multiple speed settings, a "Soft" start feature that will be sure to save a few impellers, as well as feed modes.

heres the article: http://www.mrsaltwatertank.com

IMO, I think the soft start feature sold me on DC pumps. I only turn off my skimmer for maintenance and try not to turn off any of the pumps for that matter if I can. I have been through the nightmare of loosing return pumps due to consistently cutting the power to them. The Soft start feature is good reassurance for me and maybe now I can turn off the skimmer for feedings.

dc motors

I do not wish to be critical but dc motors are the wave of the future they provide better control of motor loads and can be easily modulated for variable load demand an save energy they are not just being used in the aquarium trade but are appearing in many new HVAC systems hydronic pumps, heat pumps dc compressors .....appliances ,lighting you name it the dc fab and design is getting better every day

We've used the new DC pumps on small installs up to 150gal so far and they're pretty awesome. Dialing in the flow with enough room to increase the output for equipment upgrades down the line saves a lot of money and headaches. The pump itself is pretty much silent too.

I put one on a 300. Due to marinelands crappy DD stands that place height restrictions(internal clearance of the stand is 27") and the fact that pretty much every skimmer that's rated at the gallonage is 27.5" or higher its a huge PITA.

Only reason I say its a pain is because if your sumps chamber is deeper than the desired water level of the skimmer you can't build a platform to raise it up.

With the DC pump you can open the gate valve all the way, adjust the speed of the pump to where its set low and then bring the level up with the valve just like normal.

As Jared said they're also dead silent pumps. When I set up a tank in my new place it will definitely have a DC skimmer.

I also don't like him much at all anymore anyway. Since he got popular he has pretty much become an outlet for companies he favors to use as a commercial. I don't watch 99% of his videos anymore. The 1% I do watch I usually only make it a minute in before I hit the back arrow.
