finally added a sump to my 55 reef about a month and a half ago, and i was running my carbon bags and phosguard in a bag on top of the sponge before the return section of the sump. the phosguard wasnt rolling around as much as it should so of course thats how i got this bright idea...to make my old eheim 2215 canister filter into a media reactor. money is an issue so im always looking to make stuff work...let me know if you think this works or is just complete junk.
i took a piece of pvc and drilled holes in it so water can move through it, and mounted one of the green screen pieces the eheim comes with to make a pedestal. so i put the phosguard in the bottom of the canster, then put this pedestal in and put my carbon bags on top of that and then the 2nd green thing to keep the bags from getting sucked into the pump at the top of the eheim. i put the intake tube in the return section of my sump with a little piece of hose on the bottom to extend it so it doesnt lose prime when water evaporates. the return hose from the eheim goes into my filter sock using the eheim hard plastic piece accept i used it backwards... looks like a clean install and seems to work well as far as tumbling the media, one thing i might do is put a 90 degree elbow at the bottom of the inside of the canister to get more of a swirl going. PS pic of sump is before i put the carbon bags in the "media reactor" heres a quick video of the media http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ynj1KzjB6ks
