Filter Socks

Im new to sock filters and have a question: how do you clean them? do you use bleach on them? Am I better off using the mesh type instead of the felt?

I change mine every other day or so. Since I have a bunch, I dont wash them that often and by the time I do, the socks are hard and crusty with salt and sand etc. I used to turn them inside out and then rinse on double cycle in the machine. I got tired of putting my hand into the dirty socks to turn them inside out, so I started just washing them without soap the way they were. I dont see any difference between washing them this way compared to turning them inside out first and now Im not getting dirt all over my laundry room floor.
