UV Sterilizer Question

I am in process of building a 300 gallon tank. I am going to have coral and fish. The tank will be heavily stocked. Should I go with a 57 watt UV? I have a 70 HD blue line pump.

I like the 57.

find out how man GPH is the recommended flow rate by the manufacture and use that to see what size pump you should have.

You're good for about 1500gph with that pump I believe at 0ft of head loss. If you're using it to "only" power your UV, than I'm pretty sure it will be too big. If you're using it for your returns and the UV then it all depends on design and whether or not you'll be adding other accessories that willl lower your GPH at each outputt.

you need to figure out what you flow rate through the U.V. will be.

Aqua suggests "In salt water reef environments choose a UV that matches your flow rate per hour in the 30,000 or 45,000 columns of our chart. Flow rates in the 75,000 and 90,000 columns will destroy the planktonic food supply for the reef"

if you want to be even more acurate you could look into getting a flow meter

I'm putting an 80w emperor aquatic ho unit on my system. if you go to their site they have a great install diagram for a bypass system that will give you greater control over the flow.
