quick question guys, im finally doing the plumbing for my sump/fuge and im not sure what to do with the drain pipe going into my first chamber which is about a 5' square. I have a filter sock but should I extend the pvc about an inch above the floor then add the sock with a zip tie?

should I add any time of mechanical filtration in this chamber?

Or should I just use flex tube off the pvc elbow into the sump?

need answers quick please. thanks!

1 - if you put the pvc down to within 1" of the floor you'll create a couple of problems. First, the drain won't flow properly. You'll get flushing action. Second, when the system is running, how do you plan to change out the filter sock? You won't have any room to get it out. You should terminate the pvc about 1" ABOVE the water line.

2 - mechanical filtration - what would you consider the filter sock? That is your mechanical filter ;)

3 - you should keep about 4-6 filter socks on hand. It is much more efficient to switch out your dirty socks every few days and replace it with one of your other socks as opposed to using one sock and cleaning it a couple of times a week. It becomes a major pain in the butt. When 4 or 5 socks cycle through your tank and need cleaning, it's easier and more cost effective to throw all of them in a washing machine and clean them all at once.

You are probably trying to minimize spashing which is why you have the pipe low but like Masterswimmer said you will get loud gurgling for sure that way.
