Because of the toxin you should never handle Zoanthus or Palythoa with open wounds, nor should you touch your mouth or eyes after handling the species. When propagating either of the species this is critical to remember, just the slightest rub of an itchy eye or even a small cut from a hang nail might be enough to land you in the hospital.
Zoanthus Toxin Reality
By all means don't let the toxin this coral produces intimidate you. I have worked with thousands and thousands of Zoanthus since the mid 90's and had only one incident causing some numbing and nausea. Aggression in Zoanthus in relation to your reef aquarium will be more noticed in these specimens grow.
Zoanthus Growth
Amazingly the less colorful they are the quicker they will spread in the aquarium as well. Zoanthus feed through absorption and photosynthesis, so the brighter the lights and more nutrients load you have in your aquarium the quicker the Zoanthus will grow. This can become dangerous when you have to go into the tank and actually prune back the colony via propagation. At that point a lot of toxin is released in a very small system in contrast to the current carrying it away in the ocean.
