Key I have found to SPS is pristine water quality...lighting is secondary. Put it this way if your tank looks like a swamp but you run MH it wouldn't make a difference...I have seen people grow SPS under PC lights many many times...no problems what-so-ever

To keep SPS yes water quality. If you want color and growth you will not get that from PC unless you get like monti caps and easier SPS ( digis, Birdsnest ) . I say if you are going to keep SPS get the easy ones or what they call start up SPS . Don't get the expensive ones as you will just lose your money and will not appreciate an expensive brown coral.

What other startup SPS are there? Aside from Digis/Birdsnest.

A. nana's are in general a moderately hard SPS coral to keep. If you can get one to grow then there is a good chance you can move on to some of the others.

I have a 29 gallon tank that's a mixed reef. In it are montipora digitata, 3 types of montipora capricornus, porites, hystrix (bird's nest), hydnophora and pavona under 130 watts of 50/50 compact fluorescent lighting. All of the corals are nicely colored, have encrusted the rocks and grown multiple branches/plates. I'm sure growth is slower than if I had a 150 watt MH, but I'm happy with what I've got for now and dont have to worry about heat issues. I would NOT add acros to the tank except for the bali green slimer or possibly deepwater acros.

water quality is the key. otherwise you shouldnt have any problems keeping them under pc's.. i know someone right now with double 65 watt pc's that is keepign color in digi's and caps.. they might not grow as fast as Halide..but they do live just fine.
