Ok, so after careful consideration and reading up on the threads that I started on fragging hammers and GSPs, I decided that, at the very least, I needed to frag up my GSPs because they were getting way too overgrown on the rock, which, as it happens, is where I glued down my branching hammer. So after watching a youtube video, I decided I was ready and got everything prepared. WELL.....

First off, one of the hammer branches broke off in the bucket on the way to be fragged... and other then the fact that I didnt wanna lose that particular branch, I figured, Ah, what the hell. Its all good. And decided to start on my way with fragging the GSPs. I used a small hobby knife to cut the skin around the area I wanted to frag off, and as was said in the video and the thread, started to try to peel the skin off the rock.

To my utter surprise.... IT DIDNT WORK! The skin wouldnt peel off, it just ripped and tore in small pieces. I saw polyps being destroyed, I could hear them screaming in my head. I felt so bad. I continued because it had to be done, trying to pry it off the rock with my hands, the knife, a pair of tweezers, but nothing worked. In the end, I got no useful frags, and didn't even get anywhere near the amount I wanted to trim off. I felt like MikeyZO... The Destroyer of Small Furry Woodland Creatures!

Well, I thought, the hammers cant be as bad. Boy was I wrong. They don't snap as easily as I thought. I had the base of them (there were 3 frags originally) glued into crevices of the rock. Before I could even get a slight grip on the first one to frag, the entire branch snapped off at the base. "Ok, no big deal, I'll just crazy glue it back in place." But little did I realize that my glue gel stick was... EMPTY! "Ok, dont panic, I still have some epoxy." I quickly snapped off the branch I wanted to frag in the first place and quickly epoxied the rest back down. Now on to the second one. And little to my surprise, the SAME THING happened. Only this time, the epoxy wouldnt hold enough. After about 5 mintues of tinkering with it and the glue, I finally got it to stay. But now I'm afraid I destroyed all the little heads that were budding off the stalks. I feel like such a murderer!! :sad2:

The end result, I still have overgrown GSPs, although its now a partially mutillated colony... I'm afraid of what toxins may have been released into my tank, my nice hammer colony now doesnt look right, BUT I may... just may... have 3 nice frags to do... I dunno what with.

God I need a drink now. :givebeer:

Sorry, I probably should have made this a little more clear. I only used the knife originally to "score" if you will where I wanted to start fragging from the colony I wanted to keep. I figured this way I wouldnt peel into the main colony I wanted. I tried using my hands and the tweezers and that was where the disaster started. Even trying to peel from the edges of the colony didnt work. I only started to use the knife at the end to try to get the remains of the mutilated parts up. Using the knife was a total last resort. Trust me, I didnt just go digging in there.

GSP does tend to root itself pretty well onto rocks, unless its on a flat non porous rock your gonna do more harm than good.

ITs times like that where you replace the rock they are overgrowing and learn not to ever place them on anything you don't want to throw out =0)

As for the hammer, sorry to hear, tthats the first i heard of the branches breaking so easily. people usually dremel and still have a hard time =0)

MikeyZO, don't beat your self up. I am absolutely sure there have been many many horror fraggin stories that have not been told.;-)
I know how you feel about the Hammer, I love my hammer, and will not touch it. Especially after I tried to frag a head off for a friend, and succeded to crack the skeleton of that head. My friend tells me it is doing ok.
And that GSP will be back in no time.

Thanks Awi. But this entire ordeal still leaves me with one problem. Overgrown GPSs that I dont know what to do about now. :lol2:

And whats more, I'm afraid to take the rock back out for fear of breaking the Hammers again. *sigh*

what to do... what to do...

Don't feel bad. It is not like you intentionally set out for things to turn South. Give the hammers a bit of time and the GSPs too. Everything should bounce back.

I don't think I've ever seen a happy coral after it's been fragged or moved. And Craig likes to mutilate and chop up any coral we have that is big enough nearly as soon as we get it. So much so I have to hide the Dremel.

 Well, the good news is that the frags actually look good. I dont think they got damaged, and the main colony didnt really get damaged either, except possibly for a few new heads that were just budding. But I even see some of them poking out. So, here's hoping. If anyone is interested, I will probably post the Hammer frags f/s if they're doing well next week.

If it makes you feel better.....
I had about 50 polyps of tubs blue zoas....I went to frag a few polyps, and lost about 10 polyps...then a freashwater dip killed the remainder of the colony..I have 3 polyps left....6 months of growing wasted, not to mention the $50 I originally paid for the 20 polyps I bought.

HA! Sorry bro. I try not to sugar coat it. Although I do have to say, the actual 'snapping' of the branches of the ones you actually WANT to frag isnt that bad. I have a feeling the weight of the coral out of water contributed to the base snapping. These weren't small frags. Oh, and of course, I come to find out that most people just wedge them in between rocks so they can be removed. Not me. I glued mine like a dork. But then again, I liked it. Looked like a tree in my tank. :lol2:

At least you made it though to tell the story :)
And the frag look good too!

As far as GPS, many folks who do like to keep it do so by keeping it contained to 1 rock on the sandbed so that it doesn't overgrown onto the remainder of your rockwork. Others glue it onto the back of their tanks and let it grow out on the glass. WAY easier to tear a sheet of it off of there when you want to frag it ;)
Fragging hammers (and the like) is much easier if they are on longer 'branches'.
Aside from always checking that you have twice as much glue as you think you'll need, keep in mind that epoxy doesn't 'stick' like glue..it's kinda like hard mud ..and a great place to leave your fingerprints in the event you are ever kidnapped :)
Congrats on your fragging baptism!! :spin:
