Hey everybody.I bought a frag at the swap from Jrod and Smcooler and it came attached to a frag disc with a rubber band.I acclimated it and the next night it had popped of the disc. Also the rubber band had applied pressure that it looked like it was going to cut it in half, which is what happened eventually.I phoned a friend from MR who instructed me to wedge the frags in a crack or hole in the rockwork. Also to place it in a low flow area with a soft type of netting over it so it can hold it down while the leather attaches itself to the rock work. Can anyone tell me how long will it take to attach itself? A rough estimate from someone who has done this.
Thanks in advance :)

Thanks Deanos but as of last night I don't think they had attached themselves.I checked last night when conducting a water change.I just simply moved the netting abit, the first time since December 10th.I don't have it super tight in fear that I might not be able to remove the netting afterwards.
I quess it will take longer than a couple of days

Hey everybody.I bought a frag at the swap from Jrod and Smcooler and it came attached to a frag disc with a rubber band.:)

I bought a frag as well from them and the next day it split into two:banghead:. I then used some wedding veil and put it over the two pieces on the disk. All was well for a day or two, then it started turning brown; both pieces died:sad2:....

I heard that you had the same problem.I'm sorry for your loss :( I hope it makes it and if it does and grows well I will frag you a piece in the future:)
Don't give up.This is my third. My first I ordered online and arrived dead(do a search on mr)and the second was bought from SeaVision which also died(who knows why??)

Thanks! From what I've read online they are delicate; it's always best to get them captive raised. Let us know how it turns out.

That's the only reason I bought it because they said it was in their system for a long time.I think my second from SV was straight from the reef.I will let you know how it turns out and definately keep you in mind.

fiji yellow leathers r not has hardy. your water par has to be good. strong lighting n good flow, certainly not as easy has other leathers.
i like sewing method for attachment cause it doesnt restrict flow to the coral.

I'm in the same boat, I also bought a frag of the yellow leather and it too split in half. I think the flow didn't help it since it caused it to flap and rock back and forth until the rubberband cut through.
Anyways I have it on a live rock shelf kind of in a depression now (like the middle of a bowl), not attached to anything. I tried to weigh it down slightly with some LR pieces but it eventually frees itself- but still stays in this depression. There is sand there, does anyone know if it necessarily needs to attach to LR or if it's hanging out here and the polyps are extended that should be fine?

Reefman: Also how does the sewing method work? Literally just sew the frag with needle and thread? I did a search here but could not find any reference info. Thanks for any advice.

u can either use a fine fishing line or strong thread on a needle n sew near the base but enough on the leather so it wont rip off. depending on how big the frag is, i say 2 X around a small piece of rough shape lr. tie it around the rock. if thread, by the time the thread breaks off, the leather should have attached. with fish line, u can just cut the excess once attached.
in this phase u need to adjust the flow rate where its getiing gentle flow. too much n it'll blow off when leather expands, too little n it'll rot or attack from protoea.

Thanks everyone for the info. The sewing method sounds like it would be better for the coral because it doesn't restrict flow, the only problem I have is that the frag pieces are so small now (with no base)- it's just like a potato chip wafer that there's not much to sew except the edges. So I think the net method may be better in this case but where do you get that net material? Probably Home Depot, Michaels, etc? And I assume that you then weigh down the corners of the net material with small pcs of LR right?
