I have a ridiculous amt of mushrooms in my tank that have been killing other corals and reproducing like crazy. I read that a good way to get rid of them was to use kalk paste. Kinda like killing aptasia. DON'T DO THIS!!!! 2 days later 2 tangs were dead in my tank. I'm sure this is because toxins from the mushrooms were released and the tangs didn't make it. Also, the next day, my polyp extension on my sps corals was greatly reduced. On top of all of this, the mushrooms are still alive and as annoying as ever.

Still looking for a good way to rid myself of about 500 mushrooms, but take this advice from me - Don't use kalk.

Toxins?!! Where did you read that? What's more likely, is that your alkalinity and/or pH have spiked from using too much kalk paste at one time.

I've read about toxins in mushrooms before. I'll post a link later, but I'm sure you can find one before me.

I used less than 1/4 of teaspoon of kalk guys in a 120g tank. I have a ph monitor and test alk and calcium. PH tested 30 mins afterword was .05 higher. My swings are typically .2 so that's not the issue. I didn't test my calcium or alk beforehand, but afterword they were 450 and 9.2. That's been right around where I've had it for the past few months.

Post them in a freebie thread your junk could be someones treasure. There are always people that would take mushrooms off your hand.

I do have a free mushroom thread out there. Do a search. Tried giving hundreds away...... 2 people showed up.

I dont' like killing them at all either, but they are a pest in my tank and stinging other corals. Kinda like aptasia is a pest in other people's tanks.

Most references I found, stated the chemicals released by mushrooms typically affect other corals in an allelopathic manner.

That amount of kalk is hardly enough to produce much kalkwasser paste the consistency of at least green pea soup. I don't know if it has been suggested before, but is trading your rock with an LFS an option?

Yeah, I wasn't going crazy on all 500 mushrooms at once. Just 2ml of the mixture at a time. I was going with 1/2 kalk to 1/2 water.

Quote of a quote:
------
According to the Marine Reef Aquarium Handbook by Dr. Robert J. Goldstein, some mushrooms can "produce potent toxins, so don't place them near other corals."
He also states that many soft corals can emit toxins that can poison other corals, especially hard corals. He goes so far as to reccomend that a tank only contain either soft only or hard only.
-------

Not sure why everyone is assuming that this is a PH spike or alk issue. The only change in the tank was an addition of 1/4 teaspoon of kalk on mushrooms corals (which were pissed off and released toxins as a defense). Fish were doing fine and then 2 days later, dead.

not sure of the cause....

I had a rock with zoanthids and mushrooms on it. I wanted to cut off some of the mushrooms. I put the rock in a separate container with tank water and cut the mushrooms off without removing the rock from the water. After about 15 minutes, I put the rock back in the tank. All the zoanthids died and the mushrooms thrived and grew back.

Maybe the mushrooms did have toxin???
