Hi Everyone,

I picked this guy up from Ronen on Sunday. I am hoping to get more info than "green leather". He has not polyped yet, so I am hoping to understand if he needs lots of flow and light like a fiji yellow or lower flow and light like my other leathers.

It doesn't look like any of the leathers in my coral ID book.

Leathers are the oceans biggest pouters, they get grumpy and pout if a pod crosses them wrong, get it some med flow and start it off low in the tank it should be happy after a few days.

the yellow is fabulous - all polyps out. I love them both so I am going to be a nervous nelly until green gets his act together!

Leslie... you shouldn't be a nervous Nelly when it comes to leathers, look at the advice of Chief.. and becomea practical patty, and an optimistic olga. :) Gorgeous color by the way... I hope Fiona the green leather stops behaving like a princess. :) (shameless attempt to name the leather)

I have no idea. I just got it from Deepwater on Sunday. I couldn't find a picture in my coral reference book and google gave me nothing useful under green leather coral except for neon toadstools.

The closest in shape is cladiella - but this is not "slippery like a bar of soap" nor is it white when disturbed. I do not know what color the polyps are as they have not come out yet.

It is also shaped a little like encrusting sinularia but green was not given as a color option.

OK, 2 questions...

How do I know if it is dyed? I checked my yellow fiji that came in the same lot and it has white patches on the underside and chalky yellow spots near the base. Is this normal?

What do I do about the black spots? They are not on the yellow fiji which is polyping nicely.

if a coral is dyed you will see it in the skimmate. As for the patches you can try a an iodine dip or other coral dip to try and disinfect it. Could be bacteria or a fungal infection brought on by the stress of shipping.

The skimmate looks like skimmate and there was no color in the shipping water.

Any chance the black patches will go away on their own? I have a no hands in tank policy going.

OK, I had to take out the rock (remember I glued everything FIRMLY so Brutus couldn't move it.) to cut off the black spots. I did not have any lugols, but I left in a bowl with a heavy dose of both melafix and pimafix which are supposed to kill both fugi and bacteria. The water in the bowl turned green so there is a very good chance that this coral is dyed.

I put him at low light and med. flow.
