Anyone know of an easier way to remove mushrooms from live rock? I've got about 200 small-med size mushrooms that have started to take over my tank. I've tried using a razor blade and it just takes forever. I've cleaned off one rock by pulling it out of the tank which was the way to go, but many of the others are not removable. Also, while cutting some of them off, they excrete goop which i'm guessing isn't good for other corals.

Any advice?

Nate

p.s. free purple or green striped mushrooms to whoever wants em. Got about 50 small-med ones so far with more to come hopefully.

you could try a poweread pointed at them.they ont like alot of flow but ont add to much where it can rip them off because they'll just grow back if a piece is left behind.

These things are growing faster than I can mow them down. What I really need are razorblade like scissors. That would be perfect. It is quite hard to get at them out of porous rock cuz they retreat into the tiny holes. I'm also wondering if mowing them down is gunna work or if they'll just grow back from the small piece of the stalk that is attached to the rock.

deelucky, digitalreefer, and distraktion101, feel free to PM me if you want some mushrooms. They will not be attached to any rock. I've got plenty for all.

No success. They're like rabbits. Even if I spend 2 hours getting rid of 50, one week later, they've multiplied into 50 more. i think every single rock in there has mushrooms on it and when I remove a rock, I see more mushrooms under it I didn't even know were there. This is driving me nuts.

I know there are "bad" things in our tank that can eat acros and zoos... any "bad" things that eat mushrooms?

My Camel Shrimp are under "suspicion" for eatimg my purple and red mushrooms. I am not sure if they eat mushrooms though and they may pick at your corals. Either way, I don't think there is anything that can eat the mushrooms faster than they are multiplying in your tank. I don't have as many as you and the Camel shrimp (or whatever) keeps them trimmed back but they are still around.

That's kinda the idea I'm looking for. I don't mind having them around the tank, but I feel that it is getting to a borderline takeover. I need something to keep em in check besides 2 hours with a razorblade and kalk every weekend.

Can you wrap the rock with a piece of black garbage bag? If you block them from the light I would think they would eventually shrink and melt.

Are the purples striped also or just the greens?

This would require a 120g garbage bag for the entire tank. These guys are on just about every one of my rocks.

Just the green are striped.

Next weekend I will be moving all inhabitants in the tank with the camel shrimp to a new system. If you want to try the camels, I will trade you mine for some of your mushrooms. I have at least two camels maybe more.

I read that camel shrimp eat "polyps" of other corals. Does this include sps and lps? I'm worried about them harming these.

Also, I read the same kinda thing about raccoon butterfly fish. "May eat polyps". Not sure if this refers to sps polyps or mushrooms/aptasia. Would this be a good route?

Your taking a chance and that is why I offered to trade you mine rather than have you buy them (they are cheap). My shrimp have been housed with all kinds of coral for a long time and the only coral I've noticed issues with is the mushrooms. The shrimp I have may have developed a taste for the mushrooms for some reason.

I am getting ready to nuke some mushrooms that are growing close to my SPS... Safest way is to inject them with kalk. Using a razor will just leave small pieces attached that will grow into new mushrooms.
