I find that carbon n GAC act like mechanical removal filter anyway as water n DOC's pass thru it, hence thats why they have to be clean or removed/replenished. Whats BRS motivation? To sell!

Personally I do no use carbon (unless I feel some sort of chemical contaminate has entered the tank) and I dont use any GAC's as the pellets are doin its job. Just my humble opinion.

Finally I hate cleaning that stuff, bad enough cleaning the skimmer n socks.

Thanks Tom & Harry, I'm planning on removing GAC after it's exhausted end of this week. I'll post up if I notice any differences.

Pssst Doc, isn't carbon and GAC one in the same? :splitspin

Also, I agree with your BRS opinion.

oh btw i clean the glass less often now....once to twice a week vs every to every other day.

Same here! Isn't it crazy? I still find myself cleaning it whenever I look at my tank, which is daily, but it's purely out of habit.

tom i dont use filter socks and havent for the longest time, do you still have macro algea ? and if so is it still growing or decaying ?

hmmmm...you might want to consider some type of mechanical filter while it's breaking in....other wise the bacteria bloom may cause some cloudiness in the display.
i have cheato but they never really seem to grow much prior or post pellets. definitely not decaying though. i forgot i picked up dragon's breath a couple of weeks ago...the tips are more orange but that's due to providing more light than the previous owner.
the tunicate seem to be really happy and the zoa's/paly's are doing well sprouting babies also. don't know if it's the placebo effect on my part.

Skimmer production appears to have improved but it's hard to say because my feeding schedule was also recently modified.

I started my bio-pellets 10/6/10... My trates were in check but my phos was .16... I was using GFO prior to the bio-pellts and had planned to keep running until pellets colonized, but due to the high demand for Bio-pellets I had to wait a lil longer and by the time I got my hands on them it was time to chage out GFO anyway... So the GFO was stopped cold turkey. The first week didnt see much difference but into the second week my phos had dropped to .11 three days after that I was at .09, and the skimate was beyond stinky... On 10 /25/10, I tested and got results of .03 and re-tested with new reagent and got .02 which I recorded so that I can post results without any trickory...
I gave my glass a good scrapping which was needed prior to the pellets and glass hass been cleaner than before. Water is crystal but I do run carbon, colors look great to me... All said and done Im happy with the choice...

Pellets can take a long time to really start working, IME and from reading other users accounts, 3-6 months is not atypical. Also, IME the pellets better serve in keeping low nitrates steady than bringing down high nitrates.
