I have a couple of these on the rock and it looks like tiny webbing or spongish, but it's hard. I haven't seen it get any bigger, but it all of a sudden appears whereever. Don't know if I somehow just didn't see it before or what.
I'd think if it were a sponge that it would have died already, but....
