Hiya everyone,

I'm new to the hobby and unfortunately before reading all about this hard to care species, I've bought the beautiful thing.

Anyway its in my aquarium and I'll just have to care as much as I can for it. its having all its polyps and tentacles extended so I suppose thats a good news. However as of late, I noticed those mouths in the middle of the tenticles have been opening very wide and interestingly brown mucus or strings seems to be spilling out from inside this mouth.

I'm not sure if this is brown jelly disease as its not being a jelly on the coral but rather fine strands of string like mucus.

I'm not suree if its attacking one of my coral (leather)

please advice if anyone has experienced such thing.

The tentacles are extended so I suppose its not too sick.

Thanks

Hi,

Thankyou for your response 'nice1bruva'

Interestingly enough I went out for a few hours and came back home to find that there are no more brown stuff coming out from the gorgonia, also the mouth or oral disc seem to have closed up (maybe thats why no brown stringy things are coming out)

Any clues as to what is happening ? by terminal, you mean I might have the brown jelly disease ? would it affect my other leather coral or fishes in my tank ?

many thanx.....p.s. I'll post a pic as soon as I get it.

does goniopora not have oral disc ?

anyway what I meant was the mouth thing in the middle of the tenticles.

last night its been spilling out brown things again, but this morning the mouth has closed and no more brown thing is spilling out. If they were zooanths, why would they be spilling them ?

the coral tend to close up at night, but fully extended in the day, is that normal ?

Wow.

Here is what a Goniopora coral looks like:

Here is what a gorgonian (in this case, Pseudopterogorgia bipinnata) looks like:

Ernie, can you get a picture? Your description of the discharge sounds like the way a Condi anemone expells waste. Maybe that's what your coral is doing.

are all the polyps opening their "mouths"? and are all of them expelling brown stuff? i'm one of the guilty people who have gonioporas as well, but i don't have the stoekesi one... mine also opens some of the "mouths".. but only the polyps that are closer to the light source.. i don't believe this is unusual as i've witnessed similiar behavior from my zo's that adjusted to the bright light source and they're fine.. some of the polyps also expelled some xoanthalae as i scared some of them when i was turkey basting them with phytoplankton... the polyps got scared, retracted, and released some xoanthanlae

the above pic by the way was when they were a little closed up, they can get really long in the day and morning, but tend to close up when lights goes off

My 3 year old closes as tight as a tennis ball at from about 12 am till about 4 am. About 11 am it is just about fully extended from noon on it is really extended. The two small buds I got from it are just about the same, they are about 3/16th for one and a bit over 1/4" for the other. By the way SpicyBalls, I used Ross super glue(from Staples) and attached them to a golf ball size of rubble. It's been two days and I don't see any ill effects. Still waiting for my daughter to bring over her camera for a pic, and waiting and waiting, lol.
ernieming, maybe you should post this over on AA forums. Julian Sprung had an article on them. To be fair to you not much is known about these species as they are usually short lived in the home aquaria, unless your lucky like me. Julian may be able to answer your questions correctly, I see yours is in a bit of current, looks to be anyway. I have mine set away from ph etc. where it just sways, seems to like it best. Just a thought. Here is the article by Julian it is in Volume I, Issue 12 (December 2002)
Look for the index on the left on the homepage.
