big dark green crab

i have a crab in my tank that i just notised after a year and a half... it is about 1.5 inches across is this safe to have in here

If he didn't bother you in one and a half years, I'd venture to say that it's safe . Did you have any fish missing during this time? One more thing: do you have hermit crabs? Sometimes they get out of their shells and walk naked around the tank: at that point you may think you have a new crab...

Crabs:blunt claws=safe{generally}..sharp claws=..not safe.A good rule of thumb,but all crabs are opportunistic.Even crabs that eat algae can eat meat too.I agree that if he has'nt caused any problems he is probably ok.He sounds like a big emerald crab.Look at the joints on his claws,if they are red,than he is most likely an emerald crab.
