New Reefer
Or is it the development stage of some critter?

There are several on this plug that I was given. It'd be nice to know before it becomes a problem.

Given that my camera isn't great at macros and that the subject is mostly transparent this is probably the best pic I'm going to be able to get.

Pseudocorynactis sp.

It's a relative of corallimorphians (mushroom corals). That's actually a pretty decent pic of one, they usually are closed up during the day. They stay small but can reproduce in your tank. I had one that became three over the course of a year...certainly not a plague or anything, and they didn't appear to sting other mushrooms.

I've been told the indo ones usually openned up in the day and the Caribbean ones were opposite, closed. Ffrom my experience, my Caribbean ones did both, so who knows.

Matt, you ever seen our (CA) version of them, the strawberry anemones? Great cold water animals, hardy as heck and they breed like no ones business.

Yup...Corynactis californica. We've got some on campus, very hardy little buggers. I wish they could tolerate reef temps because that red color is electric.

I've kept them in a 10g with a Iceprobe. With a little live brine, those suckers cover every surface :)
