I noticed this "growth" on the back side of a elephant mushroom. It's about 3/4 inch long and 1/8 inch wide. It's slightly hard to the touch. It also looks like there is something behind it. Any ideas as to what it is, and do I need to get it off somehow?

Sally, the photos don't help much.

It may be a sponge growing up from the rock within the fold of the mushroom. Can you push the mushroom back away from this thing and take a focused close-up picture?

Sorry John,
That's as good as it's gonna get. No, I can not push it back from what ever it is, because, *it* is attached to the mushroom and not the rock. I don't believe that it's a sponge, because it doesn't look anything like any of the other sponges I have. What it does look like is scar tissue.

OK, I've seen a similar thing before with some big "mushrooms". It may be an odd-looking form of budding. At some point the tissue may detach to become a new mushroom.
