Have got this light brownish algae growing quite well. Haven't seen it before... any ideas what it is and how to deal with it beyond the normal water quality issues?
Uhoh. On first glance it appears to be Byropsis. Do a search on the board to pull up links about it, you will find tons. If it is, almost nothing eats it.
I suggest increasing filtration (more skimming, carbon) and maintaining perfect water quality with regular changes (make sure its a well functioning RO) and reduce feedings. You will have to hand pull the algae as it grows for a while. Its not uncommon to see tanks go through a stage of it, but you need to keep on top of it or it will smother lower corals.
It doesn't look like Bryopsis to me. I think a good way to control this algae is with a tang. You could probably use Acanthurus, Zebrasoma or Naso to deal with it. Nobody seems to want to eat Bryopsis, but it doesn't look like it anyway.
What size is the aquarium? Are there any tangs already?
Wade is right about aquariums going through "stages" of algae, and it may go away on its own.
Thanks John. I did some more research and it doesn't seem to fit the pics and descriptions of Bryopsis that I found. I've been picking it out by hand and have a couple algae eating fish too. We'll see what happens.
