withering toadstool leather

In two weeks I watched a leather coral develop a thick yellow substance from top to bottom. The substance was adherent and could only be scraped off. The coral started to wither at its base and disentegrate at its top. Eventually it withered in all, slumped over and collected marroon algae. Before this happened it was very competent and did not show signs of stress. The phosphate levels were high, but have always been high. The other leather is fine. I added a phosphate resin, which was the only change. What's the deal? Is this a common misfortune?

Watch out for aluminum based phosphate removers, sacrophytons don't like it.

Thanks for the comment. Will sarcophytans die from Aluminum exposure on the average, or just show signs of irritation?
