you have a better description then, because i was going to suggest it was hair algea also from the description.
 
This is stuff on the rock, not real clear sorry. I don't know if it has anything to do with the little green things that I can't get a clear pic of because this camera stinks!

still looks like the beginnings of hair algea to me, but the stuff on the sand is either cyno or diatoms. what color are they? how old is the tank?
 
It probably is hair algae with my luck, it just didn't look like the pics I've seen. The stuff on the sand is a greyish-green and the tank is about 5 months old.

Yep, its the beginning of it. Looked the same way in my tank initially. Sorry to give you the bad news.

the stuff on the sand is probably cyno just suck it out when you do your water changes or stir it into the sand bed.

Watch your nitrite and nitrate level. The ones on the glass can be removed by magnets, or you could do it with razors manually. I too concur it's the less severe hair algae bloom. If you don't watch your dissolved organics level, it will multiply like crazy. Depending on how big your tank is, but yellow tang nibble on GHA.
