I bought this at LFS and they called it a Blue Palm Soft Coral. I have not been able to find anything out about this coral under this name. It was just a bunch of fingers when I purchased it and with in a weeks time it has sprouted the pom poms on top of the stalks. This is very fast growth. They are approx 2 1/2 " tall and the poms are about one third ( or more ) of the total height. They are very blue. Any idea what they are?

This is not a coral- it is a colonial tunicate. A search for a previous thread on the topic referring to a "lollipop coral" should turn up more info.

Once again folks, please verify the identity of critters before you buy to ensure you can adequately care for them!

I looked at the threads. They match exactly. I do feed my tank heavy (zooplankton) because I have good sponge growth, so I hope they will do fine. When I bought them they had no colonial tunicate tops on the stalks and the LPS ( which ID them wrong ) said they were hardy. I will inform the store what they are. Thanks Chucker

They are beautiful. A friend of mine had one. I lasted about two or three months. He didn't know what it was and neither did I at the time. Shame.

Keep us posted about your success with this tunicate. I'd love to have one, but am reluctant to buy one until I know others have kept them successfully.

Has anyone kept one of these beauties for say...over a year?

I live right down the street from Aquacon.. they have them fairly regularly and I've even seen them in a really nice earthy green color. The blue ones are gorgeous.

I've wanted one also, but haven't been able to ANY info on them. This is the first I've seen about them. Going to check into them more now.

I was warned away from buying one because if they die they can 'poison' a tank. (at least this is what I was told) Anyone know if this is true?

i'm curious as to how aquacon backs up the following claimer on their site:

A WORD ABOUT OUR SPECIMENS
We Wouldn't Sell You a Fish That We Wouldn't Put in Our Own Tank…
All our fish are obtained from overseas suppliers using ethical collection, handling, and shipping techniques.
We GUARANTEE YOU THEY ARE NOT DRUG CAUGHT .
That means the fish that looks good today, will continue to look in your tank, for years to come.

especially when i see them selling powder blue tangs at a fairly cheap price

Heh, funny. My 2 LFS have different names for this same animal, Pom Pom Coral and Blue Palm Coral. I don't know if they just couldn't agree on which pom sound it was or what. They both said it was a "Coral .. um or maybe it is a sponge..." :?. Not the first case of mislabeling animals, other day (and last time I shopped there) they had bright yellow, purple and blue condylactis anemones! I remarked to one of the salesmen and told them that I wouldn't give my money to a place that did that to anemones and he told me they were a rare species that is just like that! The manager did say they were dyed but it really didn't have any bad effects on them other than making them prettier.. Forever. :x

Vitz,

The only fish I have bought there are a green clown goby and catalina. The Catalina had been there for a few months hidden in the clam tank. I kept my eye on him and he's now in my tank (and has been for several months!).

I mostly buy corals there. The guys are really REALLY helpful for a beginner like me. The in-store prices on the corals and fish are a LOT highter than their prices online (sometimes a difference of $30+). I asked them why and they told me it was because the stuff in the store was the 'cherry picked' stuff. I really wouldn't know cherry picked or rare if I fell over it at this point. I'm still reading, looking, learning.

Their fish in the store ALWAYS look healthy. The guys in the store REALLY care about the livestock which seems to be a rare thing in the typical LFS. Thats the main reason I keep going back, even if it does mean I have to shell out a bit more $$$.
