Clam

On some live rock that I got a few weeks ago, I found some sort of clam. When I put the rock in the tank it released itself from where it was attached to the rock. I moved is out where I could see it and it turned itself upside down and attached itself to the rock with little strings that look like a spiders silk. It is a light brown color and has a bit of a fleshy orangeish brown mantle. It isn't any bigger than a quarter. Anyone have any ideas what it might be, eat, light requirements? I assume it is a filter feeder and light is of little concern since it turned away from the light and I saw it's foot (i think, but it looked like a tongue)out sticking in the substrate.
Any help would be great

Sounds like a mussel. Do you have a picture?

Hi, Guy

I don't have a pic, or even a camera, it would be much easier if I did. I asked Dr. Ron about it on Reef central, he said it sounds like a mussel too. It has a ribbed shell, and is very small at the hinged part, and fat at the top.

Looks like Doug Flutie has really made a mark in San Diego. Two games in and he already has a better record than they did last year.

No points, It's rounded, doesn't have any flanges either. I wish I had a camera

oh well. I looked on-line for a pic, but no luck.

Hi Ryan,

Could be a scallopbut it's tough to tell without a picture. Does the shell have pointed ends on the larger end or is it symetrically round opposite the hinge? If there are points then it's a mussel, if it's round it could be a scallop. I also have a few oysters but they have little flanges along the shell so I don't think that's what you have.
