New Updates!

It has been twelve days since I started my tank, and I think it is done cycling. Since I bought cured LR, and then sat it in Eric's tank for a month, and brought it to my apartment in a bucket full of water, I've had very little die off. The first time I tested my ammonia, I had almost imperceptible traces of it. The next time I tested, it was down to zero, as were my nitrites. As of Monday, I have very low levels of nitrates in my tank and plenty of algae growth (sad). My phosphates are hovering around 0.2, even though I'm running a phosphate sponge. The water they were sitting in was tap water, so they may leech phospates into the water for a while, I guess. I might switch from the Kent phosphate sponge to Phosban if I can't clear the phosphate entirely out of my tank soon.

I tested out my tank with a tiny zoo frag from Eric's tank, and it's been doing fine, so I went ahead and stocked a small cleaning crew (3 hermits, 5 narcissus snails, and 7 bumblebee snails - picking up turbos very soon) and 3 chromis. (I'll probably give away the chromis eventually, when I start stocking the fishes that I really want.) I've also put in some other zoos.

Best hermit crabs ever!

I also chucked in some zoo rocks that I got from Ronen - the orange ones are from the frag swap and have grown fairly considerably in their time in Eric's tank. The pink ones I bought more recently. Both rocks are doing just fine.

Better shot of the pinks before I put the orange ones in.

Good News / Bad News

Good News:

I have copepods in my tank! I've also finally moved all of my corals out of Eric's tank and into my own tank.

Bad News:

I got a blue sided fairy wrasse and he got sick. Then he seemed to get sicker. So, I took him out of my tank and put him in quarantine. In order to do this, it required moving ALL of my rock and I had to entirely re-aquascape.

Good News:

I like the new aquascape better! :)

Updated pics!

I have a little bit of aiptasia in my tank - not terrible, but I don't want it to spread. So, I got a couple of peppermint shrimp in the hopes that the look in their beady little eyes is really a hunger for aiptasia.

Also picked up two very nice pieces of coral from Brendan (Chiefmcfuz) which are already doing beautifully in my tank. Thanks so much!

Well, since I can't seem to keep my fish alive :( I'm concentrating on corals until I am back from South Africa in early February. Hopefully by then, I'll be able to go back to stocking fish.

In the meantime, Eric gave me a head of his frogspawn and a couple of small zoo frags.

Tank Updates

It seems that when it seems everything is going really well in your tank, something must go horribly awry to make up for it.

So, good things! All of my levels and beautiful. My one living fish has been healthy and active for a month with no signs of parasites. I've been running a UV filter on my tank in the hopes that even if I am killing some good bacteria, I've also killed the bad. Therefore, I got a brand new fish.

My clean up crew has taken care of the algae bloom and I've got a bunch of green and purple coraline algae growing on my powerheads and glass and returns and liverock.

But what else do I have? Bubble algae. Picked it up on a frag I got right before I left for vacation (saw it in a photo I took that day and unfortunately didn't notice it at the time). I got a couple of emerald crabs to try and control it and I'm going in clip the rest of it out today. The emerald crabs are nice and small and so far have not been disturbing anything other than algae growth and pods.

So that's where I'm at!
