  1. So i am getting a 20 gal tank

If you never plan on keeping corals, I'd consider this: http://www.premiumaquatics.com/Merchant ... ode=ma-led It's cheap and you'll never have to replace bulbs.
  2. So i am getting a 20 gal tank

For a 20g, you really just need two 23" Powercompacts or 4 T5s. That'll be enough for almost anything. I like Sunlight's Tek T5s.
  3. Temperature

Depends on what species you're keeping. Most tropical fish would do best in the 76 to 82 range. 89 is insanely high for any species. I would keep it at the lower end of the spectrum since bad things happen more rapidly at higher temps.
  4. My skimmer keeps overflowing

Hmmm. That is a very strange behavior. The only thing I can think of is there is some blockage in the airline that complete seals after a couple hours. I would inspect the venturi and airline (and air valve) and clean it out. I really can't think of anything that would cause the venturi to...
  5. My skimmer keeps overflowing

When you stop the pump and restart it, does the venturi start working again right away?
  6. Reef newbie

Books are solid reading, but the problem with them is they tend to get dated pretty quickly. Magazines and online material are actually much better for current information about reefkeeping. Wet/Drys aren't used with reef tanks these days (mostly freshwater and fish-only saltwater aquariums)...
  7. So i am getting a 20 gal tank

Are you looking for temp lights for the cycle, or permanent lights?
  8. Foodchain

Unless temperate captive systems are very different then tropical systems (and I don't think it is), it'll be impossible to set up a self-sustaining food chain in a 55 gallon. Your higher order predators will consumer faster then anything can reproduce in that small of a volume. If you added a...
  9. Reef newbie

:welcome: 1. Go glass. Almost everyone nowadays with large tanks goes glass for a lot of reasons. When you get really huge (like 1000+ gallons), acrylic might become a more attractive option. Anything in the 100-500 range is mostly glass now. Acrylic just has too many drawbacks. Oh, I...
  10. Deepwater tank update

I love that fusci!!!!! If/when I get my deepwater tank, I think I'll have to get one for myself. I'd throw one in my current tank right now (high light sps tank), but I think the borb would hate it :P
  11. Hypothetical tank upgrade

A Lumenmax Elite reflector (by Sunlight Supply) would be perfect over this tank. 250W is more then plenty (it's what I use on my larger tank). The new Lumatek electronic ballasts are very cool in that they are multi-wattage. You can select from 150, 175, 250, and 250HQI. This will give you...
  12. New fishie.

And, um, spill the beans on the backstory of its origins 8)
  13. New fishie.

Nice. I've always wanted one of these after seeing pictures of them in the wild in one of my books (I gotta find which one).
  14. electrical connections

Toggle "switchboards" used to be more popular back in the days, but nowadays, there are much more elegant - not to mention safer - solutions. Most people use controllers and controller power strips (e.g. Aquacontroller with Direct8). I generally split my power between two different outlets...
  15. Acrylic rods

Oh, and mcmastercarr has them too.
  16. Acrylic rods

Gresham will hate my answer ;) but I got mine at usplastics.com. Don't bother with anything less then 3/4" ... 1" preferable. 1/2" is WAY too flimsy to hold anything. I have 6' of 1/2" acrylic that I'm using as expensive poking devices now.
  17. Diatoms???

Hi. So you are running GFO, just not the Phosban brand? One thing I've found about PO4 measurements is it produces virtually useless results. The reason is all the algae is consuming phosphates, and the readings will ultimately show very little to no phosphates in the water. When I had my...
  18. Id on worm/slug/leech- w/pics

Ah. I didn't think those white spots were calcified. Be careful with Chitons too because some are nasty.
  19. Candy coral

Oh, It has that actinic glow to it which I can't replicate.
  20. Candy coral

Nice coral and pic :) I can never get good actinic shots (well, almost never).
