There was a very interesting study published last week about the crystals (inside special cells called iridocytes) which are embedded inside the mantle of giant clams. These apparently help them change the wavelengths of the light to make sure only the useful ones are passed to their zooxanthellae.
What is cool too is that apparently said crystals are the reason behind the patterns of the mantle.

A different slant of light
Giant clams manipulate light to assist their symbiotic partner.
